A Hungarian immigrant who came to Canada and made millions with his friendly and innovative grocery stores in Montreal, Steinberg was the force behind Pharmaprix, Miracle Food Marts, Phoenix flour and real estate company Ivanhoe Inc. • Sam Steinberg was a philanthropist, contributing to Expo 67's Pavilion of Judaism, the Helen & Sam Steinberg Foundation's Geriatric Day Hospital and many other causes. His charity work and economic influence earned him the Order of Canada in 1977.• Steinberg married his cousin Helen, who died in 2007 at age 98.
• Steinberg's three daughters inherited the store chains on his death, but internecine strife led them to sell the family business in 1989.
