The one and only Bill Cosby

Broadcast Date: April 22, 1969

When the crowds didn't flock to comedian Bill Cosby's first Toronto appearance, it was because Harry Belafonte was also in town. Or the hockey team was playing. Then there was that taxi strike…. Six years later, in 1969, Cosby's star has risen meteorically and he's playing nine sold-out shows at Toronto's O'Keefe Centre. But he's not too famous to stop by Take 30 for another chat with host Paul Soles. In this episode, Cosby describes the pitfalls of sudden fame and professes a love for Air Canada.

The one and only Bill Cosby

• Cosby narrated a 1968 documentary called Black History: Lost, Stolen or Strayed, describing achievements made by African-Americans in science, the military and other aspects of American culture.

• Besides his long career in television (Fat Albert and The Cosby Show were two of his best-known efforts), Bill Cosby has also starred in several films and written numerous best-selling books. In 2008 he branched into the music business and was the driving force behind a rap album called A State of Emergency, featuring non-sexist, non-violent lyrics. Cosby himself does not appear on the album, but its performers go by the name "The Cosnarati."
