Beatniks and teenagers, drug addicts and "night people," Errol Flynn and other manly men – they all came to audiences in 1959 on the CBC airwaves. And so did a tour of a potato-chip factory. <br /><br />The radio and television schedules below are a composite day of programming on a weekday in 1959. Television programs were on the national CBC network, while the radio programs listed here were on both the Trans-Canada and Dominion radio networks.

In the fall of 1965, Canadians were gearing up for the federal election at home, and following Rhodesia's fight for independence abroad. On the radio dial, a new educational program made its debut. For four decades, Brian Stewart has been one of Canada's most respected television reporters. He came to CBC in 1971, hosting the current affairs program Hourglass, and soon moved on to reporting on national affairs from Ottawa. A specialist in military and foreign affairs, Stewart worked overseas for both CBC and NBC in the 1980s. He received international recognition for his reports on the civil war in Sudan and the Ethiopian famine, where his work helped inspire Bob Geldof and the Live Aid relief concert. Stewart joined The Journal in 1987 and The National in 1992, and most recently hosted Our World on CBC Newsworld. On July 31, 2009, Brian Stewart will step down. The CBC rang in the new millennium across all six Canadian time zones with star-studded performances, fantastic fireworks and multiple renditions of Auld Lang Syne. CBC Television's marathon 26-hour New Year's worldwide special, 2000 Today, was the most ambitious live project in the corporation's history. CBC Radio ushered in the 21st century with its 20-hour live broadcast, "Champagne, Moose and Maple Syrup." <br /><br />The grid below looks at how Canadians ushered in the millennium with celebrations from Newfoundland to Vancouver.
