Remembering Hollywood legend Paul Newman

Actor, philanthropist, race car driver, salad dressing tycoon - Paul Newman did it all. His acting career began in the early 1950s, but it was his performance in the lead role of Somebody Up There Likes Me in 1957 which brought him to the attention of movie-goers and landed him a Hollywood contract.  Paul Newman died on Sept. 26, 2008 at age 83.

In this 1962 CBC Radio interview, Newman discusses his role in a film then titled The Winner, but released as Hud.  He expresses an interest in "the examination of corruption", and says that the part he plays in this film is the most irredeemable sort he's played.  He also explains how he went from Cleveland sporting goods store owner to Hollywood film star.

• Paul Leonard Newman was born on Jan. 26, 1925 in Shaker Heights, a suburb of Cleveland. He served in the U.S. navy in the Pacific during the Second World War, then finished school and studied acting. He moved from New York to Hollywood, and began a film career that spanned five decades. Notable works include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Exodus, The Hustler, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict and The Color of Money.

• Hud, the film discussed in this interview, was released in 1963. Newman played the lead role of Hud Bannon, a womanizing, brawling modern cowboy, described on movie posters as "The man with the barbed wire soul!" The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Newman's costars won the Oscars for best actress and best supporting actor, but Newman lost the best actor award to Sidney Poitier (Lilies of the Field.)

• Paul Newman passed away on Sept. 26 after a long battle with cancer.
