Peter Gzowski gets violent

Broadcast Date: Dec. 2, 1976

In a CBC-TV first, easygoing host Peter Gzowski wraps up an interview by punching his female guest in the face and throwing her through a window. But it's all smiles when he's done as guest Mary Lou MacDonald, a professional stunt performer, brushes off the breakaway glass and gets up unscathed. MacDonald, the vice-president of the Stuntmen's Council of Canada, comes to 90 Minutes Live to discuss her exciting career and teach Peter Gzowski a few tricks of the trade.

• The Taurus World Stunt Awards, an awards show designed to recognize the best stunt work in films, began in 2001. It recognizes nine categories, including Best Fire Stunt, Best Work with a Vehicle and Best Action in a Foreign Film.

• Silent film actor Harold Lloyd was among the first actors to perform his own stunts, earning the nickname "The King of Daredevil Comedy." His most famous exploit occurs in the 1923 film Safety Last!, where he dangles from a clock face mounted on a twelve-storey building, despite having just three fingers on one hand.
